The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory uses a variety of ground- and satellite-based techniques to monitor Hawai‘i’s active volcanoes.  Here, an HVO scientist sets up a portable GPS receiver to track surface changes during an island-wide survey of Hawai‘i’s volcanoes.

On Monday, Feb. 17, at about 7:30 p.m., lava began erupting from a fissure on the southwest flank of Pu`u `O`o.

In February 1877, an unusual eruption occurred on Mauna Loa Volcano. Part of the eruption was submarine, and the eruptive fissure was neither at the summit nor along one of Mauna Loa's well-defined rift zones.

An intense earthquake swarm occurred beneath the upper to middle East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano starting at 11:36 p.m. on Sunday, February 7. At the peak of activity, the seismic network operated by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was recording nearly 400 earthquakes per hour.

February 5, 1993

Earthquake activity this past week was considerably reduced from the high levels recorded the previous week. Three earthquakes occurred that had magnitudes greater than 3.0. The first, a magnitude 3.4, occurred on February 2 at 1:24 p.m. beneath the south flank of Kīlauea Volcano.

Nearly everyone on the island of Hawai`i should have felt an earthquake this past week. As the accompanying map shows, Hawai`i was rattled by 11 earthqukes large enough to be felt in less than four days. 
 

Episode 51 continuing...
January 22, 1993

The eruption from the episode 51 vents, located on the west flank of the Pu`u `O`o cone on the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano, continues with little change. Lava is being fed to the coastline near Kamoamoa through a well-established underground tube system with only a few skylights, through which the flowing lavacan be seen from the air.

On Thursday an explosion in the crater of Galeras Volcano in Colombia killed six volcanologists attending an international workshop attended by more than 90 scientists, and killed an additional three people not attending the workshop.

The East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano is 130 kilometers long, but only 55 kilometers of the rift is above sea level. The lower 75 kilometers of the rift is submarine and extends east-northeast from Cape Kumukahi to a depth of roughly 5,400 meters (17,700 feet).

For the past 10 years, most of the evident changes on Kīlauea Volcano have occurred down the east rift zone near and downslope from the Pu`u `O`o and Kupaianaha vents. Last Sunday, a sequence of rockfalls occurred within the summit caldera that modestly changed the size and shape of Halema`uma`u Crater.
