Unified Interior Regions

Washington

Washington's Puget Sound is a complex ecosystem directly adjacent to a robust metropolitan area that scientists from the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center study. Recent surveys have looked at juvenile surf smelt, a key link in the food web that are consumed by predators such as salmon, orca, and many marine birds.

Mauve indicates areas at risk from lava flows and avalanches of hot rock and gases called pyroclastic flows. Bright red areas that fade to orange and yellow indicate potential routes for lahars (volcanic mudflows). Not shown are areas subject to hazards from volcanic ash. Volcanic ashfall is often a nuisance but can be a more serious hazard during large explosive eruptions

A bathymetric contour map of Castle Lake, Mount St. Helens.

Researchers map the bottom of Castle Lake, near Mount St. Helens. For three days, researchers ran a small boat over the lake surface equipped with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The ADCP bounces an acoustic wave off the bottom that is reflected back to a mobile receiver in the boat. The frequencies of the send-receive pairs are used to calculate depth. More

Horizontal displacement vectors at Mount St. Helens (2008-2014)

Map of horizontal displacement vectors for Global Positioning System (GPS) stations in and around Mount St. Helens. Blue arrows show the direction and magnitude of horizontal movement, as measured at the GPS station from 2008-2014. The total horizontal displacement is indicated in millimeters (mm) and inches (in). Light blue circles at the end of the arrows are

This shaded relief image was produced from LIDAR data. LIDAR is an acronym for Light Detection and Ranging, a modern remote sensing technique used to map topography very accurately—more so than is possible with older techniques. The crater is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) wide east-west. Elsewhere the scale varies owing to the oblique viewing angle. The landslide deposit includes

Tiltmeters allowed 24-hour monitoring as the information was telemetered back to CVO. Other instruments such as displacement meters for measuring cracks, seismometers for measuring earthquakes, gas sensors for measuring gas concentrations, and magnetometers for measuring the magnetic field, were also used for 24-hour monitoring. Spirit Lake is visible in the background in
