Mount Shasta Named by Peter Skene Ogden

While traveling south through Oregon from Fort Vancouver (Washington), Peter Skene Ogden came across a picturesque mountain and river. He noted in his journal on February 14, 1827: "I have named this river Sastise River. There is a mountain equal in height to Mount Hood or Vancouver; I have named Mt. Sastise. I have given these names, from the tribes of the Indians." However historians believe he saw the Rogue River and Mount McLoughlin. This information came from Eriwn G. Gudde and William Bright (2004), California Place Names: The Origin and Etymology of Current Geographical, University of California Press.
