Popular ice control products used at airports can increase phosphorus in nearby waterways
High phosphorus levels can drive overgrowth of algae and plants, depleting oxygen and causing harmful algal blooms, fish mortality and habitat loss. A USGS study examined phosphorus-containing products used extensively at airports that experience freezing conditions.

The Upper Midwest Water Science Center (UMid) Gladstone Field office is our Northern most field office within UMid’s Eastern Data section servicing Northern Michigan. Our office is co-located with the Forest Service office, on the scenic shores of Little Bay de Noc, in Gladstone, Michigan.
