New Tracking Tag for Sea Otters
Previous generations of trackers for sea otters were bulky and expensive, depended on special batteries, and only provided an approximate location of the otter. Today's technology offers far better solutions, creating a network of animal trackers that can deliver accurate, more frequent location data, in a much smaller, low-cost, and minimally invasive solar powered tag.
Environmental DNA Research Sheds Light on Invasive Species
More than 6,500 nonindigenous species are now established in the United States, and new species are still arriving. When an introduced, nonnative disease, parasite, plant, or animal begins to spread or expand its range from its point of introduction, and when the species has the potential to cause harm to the environment, the economy, or to human health, it is considered a
Use of Robotic DNA Samplers That Can Rapidly Detect Invasive Aquatic Species
USGS researchers and their collaborators demonstrated the efficacy of using robotic environmental DNA samplers for bio surveillance in freshwater systems, showing that samples collected, processed, and preserved by robotic sampler detect organism DNA in the environment at rates comparable to those collected traditionally by human technicians.
