About the SAWSC Student Corps
The United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) offers part-time and full time entry-level, paid positions in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to current students and recent graduates. These positions are ideally suited for talented individuals seeking hands on experience in environmental science, hydrology, physical science, and biological sciences. If you are interested in field work and in building your technical skills as part of a team of expert technicians and scientists focused on water resources in the Southeast U.S., then we want you to be part of the SAWSC Student Corps! Positions for administrative support and information technology may also be available.
There are currently no student vacancies at the South Atlantic Water Science Center.

Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- US Citizenship
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Be enrolled in good standing or a recent graduate (< 1 yr ago) at an accredited High School, College or University
- Be able to pass a background check.
Compensation based on education and experience (*)
- High School Diploma: $15.75/hr
- 1+ Years of College: $16.96/hr
- 2+ Years of College: $17.48/hr
- BA/BS Degree (Recent Graduate): $19.56/hr
- BA/BS Degree with Superior Academic Achievement: $24.23/hr
- MA/MS: $35.02/hr
- PhD: $41.97/hr

If you are selected for a position
You will have approximately 2 weeks to complete additional application forms, and work will begin 6-8 weeks after all forms are completed. Once hired, students will complete required online training to operate government vehicles, obtain a USGS email address, and to access government computer systems. Additional training will be determined on an as-needed basis. Students will be issued an official ID card. Assistance with these requirements will be provided to selectees.

Field Assistant
Duties:
- Collection and processing of surface and groundwater quality samples.
- Collection of surface water streamflow measurements and ground water levels.
- Maintain scientific data collection equipment and infrastructure.
- Review, compile, and enter field data into USGS databases.
Physical Demands: Work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 100 pounds when in the field, sometimes during adverse conditions.
Work Environment: The work is performed in a laboratory or field environment. Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to the discomforts of rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Special safety precautions are required in many cases, and the employee may typically wear life jackets, special safety boots, waders, and special organism handling gear. If selected, you will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.
Duration of Appointment: This is a temporary excepted service position not-to-exceed 1 year but may be extended up to a maximum of 2 years without further competition. Employment may not exceed 180 working days in a service year. All qualified applicants, with or without Federal status, may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
Key Requirements:
- Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
- Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
- A valid state driver's license and safe driving record are required.
- Completion of a medical examination at Federal expense.
Special Requirements:
- A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
- If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State License and a copy of your driving record.
