Water-Quality and Fish Tissue Data from Boneau and Williamson Reservoirs, Chippewa Cree Tribe Rocky Boy's Reservation, Box Elder, Montana, May - September 2022
Water and fish tissue were sampled in Boneau and Williamson reservoirs, Rocky Boy's Reservation, near Box Elder, Montana. The sampling was part of a program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Sampling was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Chippewa Cree Tribe, to characterize background water quality and mercury in fish tissue within the tribal lands.
Sampling sites were on Boneau and Williamson reservoirs. Water-quality was sampled at four sites in May and September of 2022. Fish tissue samples were collected in May of 2022. Water-quality data included concentrations of nutrients and trace elements. Field data included vertical profiles of depth below the water surface, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll a, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Biological data included mercury concentrations in fillets from fish from each reservoir.
The primary purpose of the data collection was to
- establish background water-quality on the Chippewa Cree Rocky Boy's Reservation.
- collect and analyze fish tissue for mercury concentrations on the Boneau and Williamson Reservoirs.
These data will help the Chippewa Cree tribe make informed decisions regarding water quality and mercury accumulation in the food web. Water-quality data can be found by visiting the site-specific links below or accessed through the 'Web Tools' tab at the top of this page.
