As the educational component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP), EDMAP funds universities to train the next generation of geologic mappers.
EDMAP is a 1-year, mentor-guided program designed to teach students geologic mapping techniques through rigorous field mapping.
Colleges and universities in the U.S. and its territories are eligible to apply through an annual competitive grants process. University faculty may request up to $35,000 for graduate student support.
University faculty may request up to $25,000 to support an undergraduate student.

-
Since 1996, EDMAP has funded over 1,400 students at more than 170 universities
-
EDMAP geology professors and their students frequently work closely with state and federal geologists who may be mapping near a study area
-
EDMAP partners with the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to ensure students are trained in key geologic mapping skills and prepared for success as a future geologist
-
Detailed instructions for submitting EDMAP proposals can be found in the Program Announcement, which is posted on Grants.gov each September
-
EDMAP participants are encouraged to submit their maps to the NCGMP's Best Student Geologic Map Competition held each year at the Geological Society of America (GSA) annual meeting
