The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) operates as a partnership between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) dedicated to enabling natural resource managers, disaster responders, academia, and industry to investigate, characterize, and monitor land surface processes.
Established in 1990 at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, SD, as part of NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS), managed by the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) project, the LP DAAC has grown from a small archive into a global hub for land data access and user support. The mission of the LP DAAC is to ingest, archive, process, document, distribute, and support NASA Earthdata related to land processes. The vision of the LP DAAC is to advance access to, understanding of, and efficient use of NASA Earthdata in service of new and existing users.

Additional data from NASA’s Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) projects, including the Global Food-and-Water Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD), a NASA-funded but USGS-managed project, are supported by the LP DAAC.
Users can access data products distributed by LP DAAC by using Earthdata Search, the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS), or programmatically using tools such as the Common Metadata Repository (CMR) Search API or the Earthaccess python package.
The LP DAAC offers additional resources to help users work with complex geospatial data, including tutorials in programming languages such as Python and R, which can be found on the LP DAAC Data Resources GitHub.
The Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) is a convenient data transformation tool that offers a simple and efficient way to access and transform geospatial data from a variety of federal data archives. By enabling users to subset data spatially, temporally, and by band or layer, it allows them to download only the data they need. AppEEARS includes not only LP DAAC-supported data, but also Landsat Collection 2 U.S. Analysis Ready Data from USGS EROS and Historical Water Balance data from the National Parks Service, among other federal sources. By combining trusted datasets with modern data access and analysis tools, the LP DAAC helps enable users to monitor land cover and land surface changes, support natural resource management, monitor ecosystem dynamics, and inform land management decision-making and planning.
