Episode 33 began this morning at 3:11 AM HST as fountaining increased along with a sharp increase in seismic tremor and rapid drop in tilt. Fountains are currently over 500 feet (150 meters) high and inclined to the north.

A third event began with 10-20 foot (3-6 meter) high dome fountains as the vent filled and began overflowing at 23:23 PM HST. These overflows are vigorous and indicate degassed lava is being cleared from the vent.

Two large gas piston events with sizable overflows occurred from 22:43 to 22:51 PM HST and 23:01 to 23:17 PM HST. The second event had particularly large bubble-like bursts sending spatter 15-30 feet onto the outside of the north cone.

Spattering and flames are putting on a show from the north vent at dusk, though sporadic, spattering and flames have occurred all afternoon. Five small periods of precursory overflows occurred between 8:38 and 11:38 AM HST this morning.

Starting at 10:47 AM HST today, there have been 13 gas pistoning events at the north vent. Magma rises and becomes visible in the vent; rapid drainback is marked by small spatter fountains and a spike in seismic tremor 10-15 min apart.

Episode 32 ended when the south and middle vents quit erupting at 8:01 p.m. HST on September 2. The eruption produced about 12.5 million cubic yards of lava, enough to fill a hole the size of a football field one mile deep!
