Chesapeake Bay Program — Press Release — June 26, 2025

The new Land Use/Land Cover data release includes 1-meter resolution Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) for 205 counties intersecting and adjacent to the Bay watershed for 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2021/22 by county and state. Land Use/Land Cover Change (LULCC) between the three time periods is also provided. A tabular representation of the change data in the form of change matrices, or pivot tables, by county, state, region, and Bay watershed portion of each is included. In addition, tabular summaries of the three mapped LULC dates and net change of the three mapped change periods for the same geographies are provided. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi Gulf Water Science Center collaborated with the Chesapeake Conservancy Conservation Innovation Center and University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Lab in the production of the Land Use/Land Cover data, in the visioning of the project, design and implementation of methods, conducting stakeholder review of the data, analysis of product accuracy, development of the product User Guide, and the stewardship of the product through the USGS peer review process.

The new 1:2,000 Hyper-Resolution Hydrography data release for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed includes stream centerlines, stream polygons representing the stream channels, lines representing agricultural and road-side ditches, and 1-meter and 10-meter resolution geomorphons (e.g., landforms) for all HUC8 (hydrologic unit codes) watersheds in the Chesapeake. The data were produced by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in collaboration with the Chesapeake Conservancy Conservation Innovation Center. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi Gulf Water Science Center identified the need for these data in 2016, helped secure funding for the work, and stewarded the data products through the USGS peer review process.
