The objective of the Mississippi water-use effort is to collect site-specific or aggregated water-use information to be used in studying and managing the water resources of our State, to store the information in a computerized data base, and to disseminate it to the public through reports and publications.

The Mississippi Water-Use Program coincides with the national 5-year compilation. This 5-year effort serves to provide both regional and national trends in water withdrawal for both groundwater and surface water. The Water-Use Program provides estimates of water used for eight categories. These categories are public supply, irrigation, domestic, livestock, aquaculture, industry, mining, and thermoelectric power. Wateruse information complements the study of surface water and groundwater availability, and is essential to understanding how future water demands will be met while maintaining adequate water quality and quantities for human and ecosystem needs.
The water-use effort in Mississippi is greatly assisted by partners such as, the Mississippi Office of Land and Water Resources, which distributes a yearly questionnaire to every water user with a permitted well. The Mississippi Agriculture Extension Service at Mississippi State University provides much needed water-use data for all irrigation practices, outside of the Mississippi Delta. Water use in the Delta is provided by the Yazoo Mississippi Joint Water Management District. Many cities and industries provide data upon request. With an ever increasing demand on our water resources, it is vitally important to diligently seek to understand how this resource is being affected and what steps need to be taken to assure water is available for future demands.
