First in the 2013 Series
Following its successful launch in February, Landsat 8 will begin its mission on May 30th. This advanced satellite will systematically acquire images of Earth, extending Landsat’s four-decade record of our planet.

Speaker Biographies
Jim Irons
James Irons is the Associate Deputy Director for Atmospheres, Earth Sciences Division, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), a position he has held since 2007. He is also the NASA Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) Project Scientist and in that capacity ensures that the specification, design, and implementation of the mission meet science requirements. Prior to 2007, James conducted research for 28 years as a physical scientist in the Biospheric Sciences Branch, NASA GSFC, where he served as the Landsat 7 Deputy Project Scientist beginning in 1992. He is the author or co-author of four book chapters and over 35 refereed journal articles.
Matt Larsen
Matt Larsen is the Associate Director for Climate and Land Use Change at the USGS. He oversees USGS climate-change research, adaptation, and mitigation programs as well as geographic analysis and monitoring and land remote-sensing programs. Before being named Associate Director for Climate and Land Use Change in 2010, he served as Associate Director for Water, from 2008 to 2010. Prior to this duty, he was the Chief Scientist for Hydrology and led the USGS National Research Program in hydrology. Matt is the author of 75 scientific reports and journal articles and is currently the Chair of the U.S. National Committee for the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme.
Kass Green
Kass Green is the President of Kass Green & Associates. Her experience includes over 25 years of managing and supervising GIS and remote sensing professionals, as well as leadership in GIS and remote sensing research and policy. She is a Fellow in the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) and a past president of both ASPRS and the Management Association of Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS). Kass Green & Associates focuses on high-resolution vegetation mapping of outstanding landscapes including Grand Canyon National Park and the National Parks of Hawaii. All of her projects incorporate the use of Landsat imagery. Deemed the "rock star of remote sensing" by Directions Magazine, her research and accomplishments in mapping and GIS are world renowned.
