Coal exploration drill-hole lithologic, geophysical, and geochemical data for several U.S. States

This data release provides a list of published data releases that contain coal exploration drill-hole lithologic, geophysical, and geochemical data from drilling locations in several U.S. States. The text (TXT) file associated with this data release lists the State data releases that are available. The text file will be updated as additional drill-hole data releases are published. The original data were from coal exploration drilling conducted by Phillips Petroleum Company (Phillips) primarily in the 1970s. Hard-copy paper data were donated to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 2001 by the North American Coal Corporation, which purchased the Phillips assets. Under the terms of the agreement with North American Coal Corporation, the Phillips data were deemed proprietary until February 2011, a period of 10 years after the donation. Each State data release contains a comma-separated value (CSV) text file with detailed well header information for each drill record. Also included are zipped files for each county containing scanned hard copy reports of drill-hole lithologic, geophysical, and geochemical data saved in Portable Document Format (PDF). The data contained in these State data release publications were not previously included in USGS Open-File Report Series 2011-1261: Shallow Coal Exploration Drill-Hole Data -- Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas; or USGS data release doi.org/10.5066/P14JVRMJ: Coal Exploration Drill-Hole Data for Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming. State data release publications were created to electronically preserve legacy drilling information with lithologic, geophysical, and geochemical data and make the data publicly available.
