Data supporting investigations of lodgepole pine tree mortality in the Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park
More than half of Earth’s natural geysers are concentrated in Yellowstone National Park, mostly in the Upper Geyser Basin. Data were collected to support a study investigating the causal mechanisms linking geyser eruptions to lodgepole pine tree mortality and growth declines near Grand and Riverside Geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin. At these locations, growth-impacted and dead lodgepole pine trees are confined to narrow areas adjacent to geysers with the side of the trees facing the geysers and prevailing wind being most impacted. The dataset includes nutrient concentrations and temperatures in the soil surrounding the impacted trees, radiocarbon (14C) concentrations, select major and trace element concentrations in tree rings, and nutrient concentrations in needles and associated soils. Data were collected under National Park Service Research permits YELL-08030 and YELL-08310.
