Modeling impacts of cryospheric change on aquatic flows and freshwater habitat quality for Pacific salmon and coastal communities in the Arctic

September 17, 2026

To explore how cryospheric change around Alaska could impact energy available for fish growth in rivers, data from published studies and archives were compiled to run the Aquatic Trophic Productivity (ATP) model. The ATP was parameterized for three different systems: a glacierized watershed, a watershed on discontinuous permafrost, and a watershed on continuous permafrost. Data were gathered from data archives and published studies to compile the necessary physiochemical and hydrologic data to run the ATP model. We then used a combination of published data and recommendations from a 11-person working group with extensive knowledge of permafrost ecosystems to envision future scenarios in river environmental parameters. The model was run under these future scenarios and the resultant modeled fish biomass is included here. This dataset contains the environmental inputs to the model and the modeled output of juvenile Pacific salmon biomass.
