Movement data of Brown Pelicans from the Eastern Shore of Virginia
March 3, 2026
Two data files are included. The first includes GPS locations (~ 22k) of adult brown pelicans (n = 7) and the second includes characteristics of foraging trips (n = 552) from these same seven birds. Pelicans were outfitted with GPS satellite tags during incubation and data collected for the longevity of the tag. Movement data were used to define use areas during the breeding season, staging areas, stopover areas, migratory routes, and characteristics of foraging trips during the breeding season. Foraging trips are described using metrics of trip duration (h), total distance covered during a trip (km), maximum distance from the breeding colony during a trip (km), and number of trips per day.
