Nodal Seismometer Recordings of Aftershocks from the 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkiye Earthquake Sequence
At 4:17 am local time on February 6, 2023, a Mw 7.8 earthquake occurred in southeastern Turkiye. About nine hours later, a Mw 7.5 earthquake occurred about 95 km to the north of the Mw 7.8 earthquake, and over the following months, numerous aftershocks followed the main two earthquakes. To record aftershocks of the earthquake sequence, in July 2023, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) deployed 127 nodal seismometers (nodes) over much of the aftershock region. The nodes were deployed in both a grid pattern and in linear arrays across select suspected fault traces. The grid array extended ~400 km along the East Anatolian Fault and covered most major cities in the region, including Adiyaman, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Elazig, Elbistan, Malatya, and Osmaniye. Each recording station consisted of a SmartSolo IGU-16HR 3-component nodal seismometer that recorded continuously using GPS for time-correction. The grid array recorded from about July through December, 2023, and the linear arrays recorded from about mid-July until about mid-August, 2023. Collectively, the nodal arrays recorded approximately 2.2 TB of data, which are presented in this data release.
