Organic petrology data supporting a study examining petroleum source rock properties of the Icebox Formation

July 14, 2026

The Ordovician Icebox Formation of the Winnipeg Group has been interpreted as a petroleum source rock within the Williston Basin for over 50 years. Despite limited hydrocarbon production from Winnipeg Group reservoirs and being deeply buried (located below most of the current hydrocarbon producing reservoirs), the petroleum industry continues to periodically drill wells through the Winnipeg section and to cut cores of the Icebox Formation. The organic petrology data provided in this data release are part of an updated compilation of data characterizing the petroleum source rock properties of the Icebox Formation.
