Red Spruce Forest Condition in Virginia Northern Flying Squirrel Distribution

December 10, 2025

These data are forest stand structure observations for high elevation red spruce and northern hardwood forest communities in the central Appalachians of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia associated with known Virginia northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus fuscus) presence points and user generated random points. Data were extracted from U.S. Forest Service TreeMap spatial model at these points to calculate basal area, quadratic mean diameter, stand height and trees per hectare and from West Virginia Division of Natural Resource's red spruce (Picea rubens) cover layer to asses red spruce cover classes.
