Red Spruce-Northern Hardwood Ecotone Forest Measurements in the Central Appalachian Mountains

April 29, 2026

This dataset contains long-term measurements of red spruce-northern hardwood ecotone forests in the central Appalachian Mountains. To evaluate long-term dynamics in unmanaged red spruce–northern hardwood forests, ten ecotone transects were installed in 1992-1994 across the central Appalachians. The ten ecotone transects were remeasured in 2003-2005 and 2023-2025 to assess post-exploitation recovery or lack thereof. Measurements were taken to identify changes in forest structure and composition in the tree, sapling, and seedling strata.
