Temperature by depth and aquatic organism stable isotope values from Floods Pond, Maine, collected 2023-2025
We collected high-resolution vertical temperature data from a Maine lake where several southern range-edge cold-water fishes occur. Temperature data were collected every 15 minutes on loggers spaced every 3 m, and temperature was estimated between loggers at 0.1 m intervals We used temperature data to inform threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) bioenergetics simulations within three lake habitats (littoral, pelagic, and profundal) under current and projected warming scenarios. Projected warming scenarios were estimated by increasing in situ temperature readings between 0 and 6 m by either 1.4 degrees Celsius (low-rise) or 4.4 degrees Celsius (high-rise) during the ice-free season. Additionally, we collected carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values of threespine stickleback and co-occurring invertebrates to estimate diet. We used bioenergetic simulations to investigate bioenergetic potential growth related tradeoffs of habitat choice for threespine stickleback and relate findings to broader system ecology.
