Time-lapse images for debris flow monitoring at Mount Shasta, California in 2022

October 5, 2026

Over the summer of 2022 the USGS deployed temporary seismometers, infrasound arrays, and cameras along several drainages at Mount Shasta, California. Twenty-one debris flows were confirmed by the cameras or other observations. This data set consists of images from cameras placed near three drainages (Bolam Creek, Mud Creek, and Whitney Creek). Images were stored on internal Secure Digital (SD) cards and real-time thumbnail images were broadcast via cell modem for real-time monitoring. Time intervals between images were toggled remotely and range from 30 seconds to 10 minutes and images were only collected during daylight hours. The images for each camera are contained in one to three zipped folders (marked as a, b, and c in chronological order), corresponding to SD cards removed from the cameras when full. A separate zipped folder (GIFs) contains daily animations from 0700 PDT and selected debris flows seen at each camera during their operation. Images with identifiable people have been removed.
