Microprobe and FESEM Operation

The Reston Electron Microbeam Laboratory is maintained so that our lab user community will be able to collect reliable data efficiently and expeditiously. In order to operate and maintain a state-of-the-art SEM/microbeam facility it is imperative that all researchers using the laboratory understand the operation, theory, and use of the equipment that is being utilized.  This knowledge not only helps USGS and outside personnel to better understand the data that is being generated but it is also essential to protect the investment of equipment that the lab must maintain. Laboratory Staff conduct periodic calibration and maintenance checks to document instrument stability and to ensure that all data are of known and documented quality.  Lab Staff provide instruction and guidance to all lab users on the proper use of instrumentation as well as help in the development of research methods/applications.
