Welcome to CoreFacts, where we're always short on time and big on science. I'm Steve Sobieszczyk. Well, today we have some trivia for you.

Where is the largest active volcano in the world?

Mauna Loa (Hawaii) is the world's largest active volcano, projecting nearly 13,700 feet above sea level, with its actual peak being over 28,000 feet above the deep ocean floor. From its base below sea level to its summit, Mauna Loa is taller than Mount Everest, making it not only the tallest volcano, but also the tallest mountain on earth.

And now you know. Join us every weekday for a new CoreFact. If you have a question you think we should answer on the air, email it to us at corefacts@usgs.gov or leave us a voicemail at 703-648-5600; don't forget long distance fees do apply.
