A photo of an alcove at Painted Rock
Detailed Description
This view is looking west toward Painted Rock toward an alcove that is home to a variety of ancient rock art.
The Carrizo Plain was part of the ancestral territories of the Chumash, Yokuts, and Salinan native people. Painted Rock gets its name from the striking, colorful figures that they painted on the surfaces of the sandstone. These figures have been and remain important archeological resources (Bureau of Land Management, 2010).
