Amanita amerirubescens

Detailed Description
This is an Amanita amerirubescens, the blusher. It stains red when injured, earning its name. Amanita is a large genus that contains some edible species, like this one, and some that are the most toxic mushrooms on the planet. Certainly not worth risking eating Amanita species until you really know your mushrooms!
This specimen was found on the Blue Square Trail at the Long Ridge Conservation Area, Sullivan, Missouri. This image is part of the article Trailheads: Portals to the Fungal Dimension.
