Caroll Rim and Sutton Mountain

This view from the Painted Hills Overlook Trail shows the John Day Formation exposed on the southern flank of the Carroll Rim. The Picture Gorge Ignimbrite caps the rim. A 1.5 mile hiking trail leads to the top of the bluff from the Painted Hills Overlook/Carroll Rim trailhead parking area. The sagebrush and juniper in the foreground are common plants of the high desert in eastern central Oregon.
