Collecting samples at Summer Lake
Detailed Description
Scientist using a core sampler to collect aquatic invertebrates from lakebed sediments in shallow water where shorebirds feed, Summer Lake, Oregon.
A benthic core sampler works by pushing a tube into the lakebed to capture a vertical section of sediment, then sealing and lifting it out intact. This allows scientists to study organisms and sediment layers from the bottom of shallow waters.
