Debris flow deposits

Detailed Description

This gravel bar and dry stream channel of Chalone Creek is on the east side of Pinnacles National Monument (below a new bridge). The valley of Chalone Creek and its tributaries has a history of floods and debris flows (Meyer, 1995). In 1998, heavy rains resulted in debris flows that destroyed a park bridge and spread gravels throughout the valley. In this photo, taken in 2003, the gravel deposits still covered the valley floor and only a small sandy channel had formed in the years since the flood.
