Dunes near Stovepipe Wells

Detailed Description

Sand dunes cover much of the southern part of Mesquite Flat valley in the vicinity of Stovepipe Wells. The dunes are a relatively stable feature located at the intersection of southern Death Valley, Mesquite Flat (the northern part of Death Valley) and the northeastern end of Emigrant Wash valley. Changing seasonal wind patterns and a constant supply of sand from washes in the valley keep the dune field in a relatively stable location. This view is looking northeast from Highway 190 near Stovepipe Wells. The Grapevine Mountains are in the distance. For an aerial view of the Sand Dunes, click here.
