Ecological characteristics of four example fuel breaks

December 2024 (approx.)

Detailed Description

Ecological characteristics of four example fuel breaks. Higher, relative values for each variable are indicated in panels ad by both larger points and longer gray bars. These include: mean burn probability; mean predicted fuel break effectiveness; resistance and resilience value; mean annual herbaceous cover; and wildlife habitat importance estimated by the proximity of the fuel break to sage-grouse priority areas for conservation, 25% multispecies sagebrush obligate avian breeding habitat core areas, and pygmy rabbit primary habitat. The combination of these variables contributes to the risk/benefit profile of the fuel break. The map (g) shows the locations of the four example fuel breaks shown with colored points, with all known fuel breaks in gray. Sagebrush biome extent (Jeffries and Finn 2019) is outlined in black. Imagery of the four example fuel breaks with an outline of the features are shown in panels ehf, and i. From Roche and others (2024).
