El Malpais - Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone

This view from the Narrows Rim Trail shows the rugged rim rock of Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone and the extensive volcanic flows of El Malpais National Monument. The name "Narrows" applies to the historic narrow passage between the rugged lava flows on the west and the steep, inaccessible escarpment of sandstone of the Cebollita Mesa to the east.
