Gulf of America seafloor bottom sediments that experience seasonal hypoxia contain higher relative percentages of three benthic foraminiferal species. The cumulative percentage of these species forms the PEB hypoxia index, which is used to identify past occurrences of seasonal hypoxic conditions.
