Hawaii Volcanoes - lava trees

Lava trees form where lava flows inundated a forest, leaving standing molds of where some of the trees stood and were incinerated before the surrounding lava drained away. These lava trees are along the edge of a flow near the Mauna Ulu parking area on Chain of Craters Road.
