Detailed Description

The eruption began at 1:25 a.m., and the glow was visible from much of the island. After about 4:00 a.m., the activity migrated into the upper northeast rift zone (to the right of the glow) and diminished in the summit area. The view is WNW from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which is located on the rim of Kīlauea Volcano's caldera about 30 km from the summit of Mauna Loa.
