January 24, 2026 — Kīlauea episode 41 lava fountains
Detailed Description
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists observed and documented episode 41 of the episodic Kīlauea summit eruption in Halema‘uma‘u. Lava fountains in both the north and south vents were active with maximum heights reaching 460-480 m (1500-1575 ft). Tephra fallout ranging in size from about 1-15 cm (less than an inch to 6 inches in diameter) reached the Keanakāko‘i Overlook in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, which the National Park Service closed due to hazardous conditions as tephra continued to fall during the episode.
