June 8 Thermal map of Fissure 8 lava flow at coast

This thermal map shows the Fissure 8 lava flow along the coast, as of 12:30 pm on Friday, June 8. The flow from Fissure 8 remains active, with the flow front entering the ocean at Kapoho. The thick gas plume from the ocean entry obscured sections of the flow, producing several artifacts in the thermal map. Nevertheless, the thermal map shows that the most active portion of the flow in this area was along the southern lobe, which covers Vacationland. The black and white area is the extent of the thermal map. Temperature in the thermal image is displayed as gray-scale values, with the brightest pixels indicating the hottest areas. The thermal map was constructed by stitching many overlapping oblique thermal images collected by a handheld thermal camera during a helicopter overflight of the flow field.
