Detailed Description

Lake Mead 's northern entrance is at milepost 43 on the Northshore Road. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was established by Congress on October 8, 1964 and was the nation's first National Recreation Area (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, 2008). The area's main features are reservoirs on the Colorado River-Lake Mead, formed by Hoover Dam, and Lake Mohave, formed by Davis Dam. The two reservoirs make up about 13 percent of the the recreation area. Some development and multi-use areas exist around the marinas and access roads, however, the vast majority of the area is rugged and roadless desert.
