Landsat 8 Mosaic of Okavango Delta

Detailed Description

The Okavango Delta in Botswana, one of the world’s great inland waterways, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

The Okavango is one of the few interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean. The delta experiences rising and falling water cycles each year, with much of the water dissipating due to evaporation and transpiration. During its seasonal flooding period, the delta’s footprint increases greatly and welcomes large concentrations of wildlife.

The USGS Landsat data archive provides a useful resource that helps monitor changes within the delta, including the burning areas that can be seen in this image. Landsat imagery and derived science products provide beneficial information to agencies and scientists studying the land and wildlife, allowing them to make better informed decisions in their quest to preserve and restore these richly biodiverse ecosystems.
