Little brown bats

Detailed Description

2021 Photo Contest_29

NABAT PHOTO CONTEST WINNER: 1ST PLACE, BAT SPECIES OF INTEREST!

Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) are highly social mammals. These bats are part of a maternity colony of 200–300 little brown bats that gathers each spring and summer at a private residence in Pepperell, Massachusetts. They roost and rear their pups in the rough, fire-scarred wood and rafters of a garage that connects the main house to a horse barn. Roosting in large numbers provides social interaction, some protection from predators, and temperature stability. Unfortunately, bats have declined significantly over the last decade due to White-nose syndrome and human activity.
