Mountain lion
Detailed Description
Habitat change from wildfire and forest restoration treatments can influence habitat conditions for mule deer, elk, mountain lions, and black bears in New Mexico. We are teaming up with our cooperators and partners to design better restoration treatments that reduce wildfires and improve habitat conditions for wildlife. USGS researchers at the New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at New Mexico State University are teaming up with cooperators and partners to create better forest restoration treatments that may help reduce wildfires and improve habitat conditions for wildlife species. As part of Southwest Jemez Mountains Collaborative Forest Restoration Project, we are monitoring how these animals respond to change in habitat conditions related to food, cove, and breeding sites. This ongoing research with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Jemez Pueblo, and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is assisting with smart decisions on restoration treatments that protect these amazing wildlife species and their habitats.
