The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program: Timeline
1974: The Core Research Center repository is established to preserve valuable rock cores and cuttings.
1993: The NSF Ice Core Facility is built to store ice cores collected from around the world.
2005: The Energy Policy Act of 2005 establishes the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program.
2021: The Program is reauthorized in Section 7002 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law charges the Program with preserving geologic materials and data focused on critical minerals.
2026: New state-of-the-art ice core facility opens, replacing the original ice core facility
