Painted Gorge

Detailed Description

This view is looking north toward the confluence of Rock Creek with the John Day River in Picture Gorge (also the intersection of Highway 19, shown here, with US Highway 26). About 1,000 feet of lava flows of the Picture Gorge Basalt are exposed in the walls of Picture Gorge. Note the columnar joints in the basalt flow on the right side of the road.
