This view is looking north (downstream) along Garden Creek Canyon toward Bright Angel Canyon and the North Rim (partly obscured by storm clouds). The break in slope on the left defines the conformable boundary between the underlying Bright Angel Shale and overlying Muav Limestone at the base of Redwall escarpment. The trail to Platform Point is visible near the center of the image. The trail crosses the Tonto Platform. The platform develops by differential erosion along the boundary between the soft shale of the lower Bright Angel Shale and the more erosionally resistant, underlying Tapeats Sandstone.
