Detailed Description

These are two different types of mushrooms. On the left is a red-capped brittle-gill Russula species, a very common genus of mycorrhizal mushroom. The one on the right is Lactarius psammicola, one of the milky mushrooms, which exude latex when cut or damaged.

This specimen was found on the Blue Square Trail at the Long Ridge Conservation Area, Sullivan, Missouri. This image is part of the article Trailheads: Portals to the Fungal Dimension.
