Sage grouse seasonal habitat map

Detailed Description

This maps show how one of the American West's most iconic species, the greater sage-grouse, uses its habitat during different times of the year across large swaths of the Great Basin. Areas in red show a high probability, and blue, low.

The maps are part of a report which can help federal and state resource managers and other stakeholders conserve sagebrush ecosystems that the grouse may rely on the most during important life-history periods and across the entire year. This decision support tool also accounts for differences between available habitat in wetter, northern areas versus drier, southern areas, and incorporates high-resolution mapping of sagebrush community components, like the spread of with pinyon and juniper trees into normally treeless sagebrush habitat and percent cover of different sagebrush shrubs and herbaceous vegetation.
