Scientist preparing samples for Next Generation Sequencing

Andy Reeves, USGS Alaska Science Center, prepares to sequence influenza A viruses in the Molecular Ecology Laboratory. The samples were collected from wild birds in Alaska. The USGS uses genomic information on influenza A viruses in wild birds to understand how economically costly highly pathogenic and foreign-origin pathogens may be introduced into and dispersed within the United States.
