September 8, 2026—Kīlauea summit eruption reference map

This reference map depicts the Kīlauea summit eruption within Halema‘uma‘u crater that began on December 23, 2024. Most of the data for this map were collected during a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory helicopter overflight on August 28, 2026, so the provided statistics are reflective of the entire eruption through episode 54 on August 25. 

Eruptive vent and tephra cone statistics through episode 54: 

• Vent elevations: 1,080 meters (3,545 feet) 
• Vent level below crater rim: 60 meters (195 feet) 
• Vent height to surrounding lava: 50 meters (165 feet) 
• Cone's peak elevation: 1,186 meters (3,891 feet) 
• Cone's height to crater rim: 47 meters (154 feet) 

Lava statistics through episode 54: 

• Average lava elevation: 1,014 meters (3,327 feet) 
• Average lava thickness: 97 meters (318 feet) 
• Maximum lava thickness: 180 meters (590 feet) 
• Total lava extent: 461 hectares (1,140 acres) 
• Total lava volume: 312.6 million cubic meters (82.6 billion gallons)
