Southern Appalachian Lithium Map
Detailed Description
A new USGS assessment estimates that the southern Appalachians hold 1.43 million metric tons of undiscovered, economically recoverable lithium oxide, concentrated in the Carolinas, and enough to replace 201 years of U.S. imports. The lithium is present within pegmatites, large-grained igneous rocks similar to granite.
This is enough lithium for:
- 1 Million Gridscale Batteries (delivering 4 megawatt-hours)
- 80 Million Electric Vehicles
- 110 Billion Laptops
- 300 Billion Cell Phones
Other uses of lithium include aerospace and medical devices.
